....c6 in scandanavian defence? After 1.e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 Nf6 5. Nf3... Can someone tell me what the point of 5...c6 is?

It just seems a little pointless to me and robs black of the c6 square for his queens knight?

I have played this as black. I wanted to avoid c6. I had seen that it was always played.
But I had to play it.
As I see it, it creates a retreat for Queen, if she is attacked.
At the same time it stops white from playing d4-d5.
You often see this in Accepted QGB. 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4. Black plays BOTH e6 and c6, to stop d4-d5.
-------Here is my game.

example why c6 is better than Nc6.... This is the start of a game that I have played here at gameknot.

5... c6 1) Black's QN should go to d7, not c6 in this setup.
2) Provides an eventual retreat for the Q to c7 or d8.
3) Prevents (or forestalls) the d4-d5 advance.

5... Bg4 and 5... Bf5 are also good moves, but Black invariably will have to play ...c6 at some point to prevent d5 and so the Queen isn't stranded out of play.

On 5... Ne4 probably best is just 6. Bd3 when 6... Nxc3 7. bxc3 Qxc3+ 8. Bd2 gives White a huge lead in development.
